Comments let you talk about the work without changing it. Leave a question or a piece of feedback where it belongs, on the card or the cell it is about, and resolve it once it has been dealt with. They are the lightweight way to review work, agree on changes, and keep a record of why something is the way it is.
There are two places a comment can live: on a card, and on a cell of a Sheet. Boards, Dashboards and Forms carry no comments of their own: the conversation lives on the cards they show.
Commenting on a card
Every card has a conversation at the end of the Overview tab of its card panel, under Comments.
Click a card to open its panel. Scroll to Comments at the end of the Overview tab.
Type in the Add a comment… box and press Comment (or Ctrl+Enter, Cmd+Enter on a Mac). A plain Enter starts a new line.
The comment appears in the thread with your name, colour and how long ago it was posted. On the board, the card shows a speech-bubble with the number of comments while its thread is open.
You can delete your own comments with the bin that appears when you hover one; people who can edit the plan can delete anyone's. See Cards for everything else the card panel holds.
Commenting on a Sheet cell
On a Sheet, a comment is about a single cell. Right-click the cell and choose Insert Comment (or press Ctrl+Alt+M, ⌘⌥M on a Mac), type your note and press Comment. The cell shows a small amber triangle in its corner while the thread is open; rest the pointer on the cell to read the first comment, and press the triangle (or Show Comments in the cell menu) to open the whole thread. See Comment on a Cell.
While a tab has cell comments, a Collaborate button appears in the bottom-right cluster with a count of the threads still open. It lists every cell thread on the tab by its Sheet and cell, such as Budget!B4; switch to Resolved to see the ones that are settled, and press a row to go to its cell.
Mentioning a teammate
Type @ in a comment to tag someone on your team. A list of teammates appears as you type: use the arrow keys and Enter (or click) to pick one, and their handle, like @priya-kaur, goes into the comment. Esc closes the list and leaves what you typed.
A mention does two things for the person you tag:
- The thread appears on their Inbox, even if they never commented.
- They get an email quoting your comment, unless they have turned off Someone Mentions Me in a Comment in their email notifications. For a card, the email's button opens that card.
You can mention the members of the team whose library holds the plan, as long as you are a member of that team too, including people who have been invited but not joined yet. On a personal plan there is nobody to mention; move it into a team library first. You need to be signed in to mention anyone.
Resolving comments
Once a comment has been actioned, press Resolve at the top of its thread to clear it from the working view while keeping the record. It becomes a green Resolved badge and the reply box is hidden; on a card the comment count goes away, and on a cell the amber triangle does. Reopen beside the badge opens the thread again, and so does a new comment. Use comments to:
- Request changes during a review without editing someone else's work directly.
- Ask a question on the exact card or cell it is about.
- Capture a decision so the reasoning is not lost once the plan changes.
Comments and collaboration
New comments appear for everyone in the plan as they are posted. A collaborator can answer a question where it was asked, and a reviewer can leave feedback for the owner to pick up later. Open threads you are part of are gathered on your Inbox, across every plan.
Because liveplanner works without signing in, a guest you hand a share link to can read and join the conversation too. Commenting needs a Participant or Editor share link: someone on a Viewer link can read the threads but not add to them, resolve them or delete anything.
A few things to know:
- Comments aren't part of undo. Pressing undo never takes back a comment, yours or anyone else's.
- Owners can be emailed. When someone comments on a plan you own, you can get an email, controlled by Someone Comments on My Plan in your email notifications.
- Comments stay with their card. A card keeps its thread when it moves between columns or boards. A copy of a Sheet starts without its cell comments.
Keep each comment to one point. A thread that asks a single, specific question is far easier to resolve than a long one covering five unrelated things.
