Side by Side Tabs

Put two tabs of a plan on screen at once, and work on either without losing sight of the other.

Tabs keep related work together: the board and its dashboard, the form and the board its answers land on, the plan and the budget sheet behind it. Side by side puts two of them on screen at once, so you can compare them, or keep one in view while you work on the other.

Opening a tab beside another

Drag a tab's pill from the tab bar toward the right edge of the screen. A glowing rail wakes along the edge as you head for it, and once you're close, a preview of the pane slides in showing that tab. Let go there, and the tab opens on the right.

  • Drag a different tab and it opens on the right, while you keep working where you are on the left.
  • Drag the tab you're on and it moves to the right; the tab you were on before fills the left.
  • With two tabs already side by side, drop another tab on the right to show it there instead.

You can also open the tab's menu (the ⋯ button on the active tab, or right-click the tab) and press Side by Side in the row of quick actions along the top. It shows that tab on the right, beside the tab you were on.

Working across both

Each tab keeps its side. The site header runs across the top of both, and the tab bar across the bottom, just as with one tab. Controls such as Undo, Redo and Style sit in the pane you're working in.

To work on the other tab, click in its pane, or simply rest the pointer there for a moment, and the controls move across to it.

The pane you're not working in is live: anything you or a collaborator changes on that tab shows there straight away. A card you add on a board shows up on the dashboard beside it as soon as you add it.

Collaborators see you on both tabs in the tab bar, since both are on your screen. The tab in your other pane has a dashed outline on its pill so you can tell which it is.

Resizing and closing

The seam between the two panes is a handle: drag it to give one side more room, or double-click it to go back to halves. You can also focus it with Tab and use the arrow keys.

Two buttons sit on the seam, just above the handle:

  • Fit Both Sides fits each tab to its pane.
  • Close Side by Side goes back to one tab, the one you were working on, across the whole window. The same button appears in the tab's menu while two tabs are side by side.

Which two tabs you had side by side is remembered on this device for each plan, so they come back the next time you open it. Where you left the divider is one setting for this device, used by every plan.

Screens it works on

Side by side needs room for two working panes, so it's offered on screens at least 1,400 pixels wide and 700 pixels tall (inside the browser window): most desktop monitors and larger laptops. On smaller laptops, tablets and phones it isn't offered, and you switch between tabs from the tab bar as usual.

It also steps aside in Zen mode, and comes back when you leave it.

Keep a Dashboard open beside the board you're working on, and watch its counts and charts follow each card you move.
